A collaboration between Sabrina and singer/actor and friend, Joshua Basset was suppose to appear on his debut EP. Joshua later removed the song and replaced it with another. The song was called “We Both Know” and has remained officially unreleased. Teen Vogue shared Sabrina and Joshua’s reasoning for not releasing the song. The article can be read below.
There’s another chapter in the continuing saga of Joshua Bassett, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo’s smash hit,“Drivers License”. As Joshua prepares to further his own musical career, releasing his debut EP in March, he’s announced that a planned duet featuring Sabrina will no longer appear on the album.
Joshua attributes the “mutual decision” to the continued scrutiny surrounding a reported relationship with Sabrina. “I didn’t want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make”, he told Billboard. “I really want the focus to be on the art instead of some of the talk and the chatter. You shouldn’t live to please everybody, but at the same time, there are ways to be sensitive to situations where maybe [‘We Both Know’] has a better chance at a different time”.
Although he doesn’t directly specify which narrative he’s referring to in the interview, the announcement was made as fans continue to theorize Joshua and Sabrina’s place in Olivia’s “Drivers License”. In his Billboard interview, Joshua notes that he thinks “people are trying to find deeper meanings” to many of Olivia’s lyrics.
Since its release, “Drivers License” has weathered its share of social media speculation, as some believe that Olivia and Joshua were previously together. The two reportedly split, and then when Joshua was spotted with Olivia, some theorized that the pair were now dating, and that Olivia referenced the relationship in “Drivers License”.
Olivia has yet to confirm anything regarding the single’s subject matter, telling Billboard, “It’s resonating with people because of how emotional it is, and I think everything else is not important”.
Joshua didn’t confirm whether the duet with Sabrina would ever be released, but he’s excited for the EP to officially arrive on March 12. “It’s the most proud I’ve ever been of a body of work. I showed myself that I can really do more than what I thought. It’s got me all over it — people will be able to feel that when they listen to it”, he said.
